I’m Going to be a Health Coach!

That’s right! I’m so excited to FINALLY announce to everyone in the world.. that I am currently enrolled in an online 11 month course to become a health coach!

Some of you may know about the Institute of Integrative Nutrition (IIN) and some of you may not. The IIN was founded in 1992 by an amazing man named Joshua Rosenthal. It stated as a classroom in New York City and is now the largest (and coolest) nutrition school in the world. There are around 100,000 students/graduates in over 100 countries around the WORLD!

Why is this nutrition school so popular? Because it’s integrative.

I have only been in this course since the beginning of January, but I can already tell you that this program compares to no other.

We don’t just talk about Vitamin A, B, and D. We talk about Vitamin L – Vitamin Love. We don’t just talk about what’s on your plate. We talk about other ways to feed yourself – through your career, your physical activity, your relationships, and your spirituality, which Joshua labels as Primary Food. He calls nutrition secondary food. We don’t talk about all calories being the same. Rather, we learn how certain calories make your fat cells hungrier than others. We learn that white vegetables clean out fat and how root vegetables will literally make you feel grounded. We don’t talk about how one diet will work for everyone. Instead, we learn about bio-indiduality and how one person’s food is another person’s poison. We talk about the nutritional power of connection, how people change their lives based on what they feel, rather than what they know, and changing your level of happiness. We talk about how you do not have to be a victim to your health.. how you have a choice every day to change your lifestyle, and although it’s probably hard and scary, you still have a choice.

And my favorite: We talk about how no amount of kale is going to counter-balance the poisonous effects of chronic repetitive stress response in the body.

So, you see? Integrative. Bringing together the mind, the body, the soul, in terms of nutrition and health… a completely different approach than what I’ve learned in achieving my Bachelor Degree of Arts in Health and Exercise Science. No one talked about how feeling lonely can be so taxing on the heart, causing the nervous system to be in chronic stress response which could result in a heart attack, even if you are eating the healthiest food in the world. In college, I learned micronutrients, macronutrients, recommended serving sizes, dairy is good for everyone, meat protein is better, that it doesn’t matter how you eat your food, as long as it’s healthy… and so on. Only about 25% of what I learned in my major resonated with me. I knew there was so much more than numbers. I wanted more.. and I found it, here at IIN.

Each week a new module opens up and Joshua has a beautiful way of approaching all learning styles by providing lecture videos, home cooking videos, slideshows, audio recordings, group sharing, and links to so many outside resources.

I love being a student, being back in school, and constantly being inspired to make the world a happier and healthier place.

In just a couple of months, I can actually begin my health coaching practice and meet with some of you! So stay tuned. If you have any questions, or want more info on IIN, I’m totally here for you.

Until then, be well my friends, stay learning, and always remember your magnificence.
